Our Historical Props division provides a wide range of antique and reproduction items for film projects -- from something as large as a wagon to something as small as a pin.

Areas where we've provided help in the past include:

• Antique & reproduction furniture, textiles & soft furnishings
• Kitchenalia, tableware and common household objects
• Period signage and product labelling
• Books, newspapers, documents, pens, writing implements
• Soldiers' personal items and company mess items used in encampment scenarios
• Soldiers’ equipment , arms & accoutrements, tents and camp set-ups
• Set construction
• Wagons, carriages, horse tack, ships and boats.
• Farm implements, period tools, and livestock
• Period food and historically accurate food stylist services

If film budgets permit, we can act as your buyers, procuring accurate items. As our membership includes period-specialist antique dealers, we can generally obtain these items at "to the trade" wholesale prices. If budgets do not justify purchase of items, we have a large inventory of props available for rental.

Mark Hughes, Historical Props:  Mark Hughes started building and supplying props for movie productions in the 1980s and began working full-time for productions in the 1990s.  Since then, he’s never looked back.  He does restoration and conservation work for individuals and museums, acts as a buyer, and rents props to period shows.  He most enjoys his involvement in feature films, television movies and episodic television in the art or prop departments, and loves to work on set if possible.

Mark has been a competitive shooter for over thirty years, exclusively with antique and historic firearms; he routinely acts as a safety officer at national competitions where over one thousand participants gather, making him a natural fit for H.E. productions in which many props must be carefully maintained and managed and actors must be trained to safely and correctly handle period firearms.

Mark’s credentials include a bachelor’s degree in American history from Pfeiffer University, anthropological studies at the University of Tel Aviv, and business school at the University of Virginia.  In addition, Mark has completed historical research and editing for R.W. Beatty, academic publishers; he’s also served as a museum staff member at the Flint Run Paleo Indian Complex, designed historic programs for the Virginia Tech Extension Service, completed architectural research for the Preservation of Historic Winchester (Virginia), appraised and conducted adaptive use studies of historical railroad properties for Conrail, and completed restoration of historic properties as a licensed Virginia contractor.

Mark’s extensive experience in the television and film industries includes work as a prop master or assistant; he’s also designed sets, created budgets for multiple departments, and acted as an art director and production designer for venues such as the History Channel, A & E, and HBO.  A selected list of some of Mark’s credits is as follows:

  • Last of the Mohicans (third props, Twentieth Century-Fox)
  • Sommersby  (second props, Warner Brothers)
  • Thomas Jefferson (prop design and production, Discovery Channel)
  • Major League II (second props, Warner Brothers)
  • Tecumseh:  The Last Warrior (second props, Turner)
  • Gods and Generals (second unit assistant propmaster, Antietam Filmworks/Warner Brothers)
  • Cold Mountain(third props for American crew, Miramax)
  • Civil War combat series (series prop master, History Channel)
  • John Adams (second unit prop master, HBO)
